If I have learned anything in my 9 years as a boudoir photographer, it’s that every girl out there has something they dislike about their body. Be it a protruding belly, cellulite or acne, the list goes on and on. Even if they fix one thing they hate…ie have a tummy tuck, it moves onto something else. Its like we are not allowed to love our bodies. Society only fuels the fire by imposing unrealistic beauty standards that can compromise any girl’s self-esteem. As a result, some people engage in drastic measures to fit in, including diets, dangerous (or at least money wasting) diet drugs , or even surgeries.
Understanding the Causes
Even though there is no definitive reason for body image struggles in girls, several factors can contribute to it. For instance, we can blame social media, advertising, and other media outlets for their unrealistic portrayal of beauty standards that most girls can’t live up to. Another factor can be our peers, family, or even intimate partners who put too much emphasis on physical appearance. Generationally women have criticized or critiqued their daughters about their weights and EVEN if they haven’t they certainly have complained about their own bodies….and those little ears are listening.
