One of the biggest questions I get as a boudoir photographer is what do I wear??????? Boudoir is not something everyone does every day so it is hard (and sometimes nerve wracking) to try come up with outfits that are sexy AND flattering. Add in the fact that we are our own worst critics and you can end up in a full blown panic before you even walk in my door. Definitely not a good way to start. Boudoir is fun, its empowering, its pampering, hell it can be addicting….panic inducing is so not what I am going for.
But the difficulty comes in telling you what to wear, because I fully believe that your boudoir session should be as individual as you are. We all define sexy, beautiful, glamorous whatever…differently. So there is no one one fits all answer for you. I have written many what to wear Wednesday posts about dressing for your body. I decided it might be easier to tell you what NOT to wear…
- Please don’t wear lingerie that is too small. Try the stuff on ladies….I can usually clip or pin lingerie thats a little too big, but too small is just not a gonna be a good thing. Its just not. Anyone who has come to see me knows I can be pretty blunt. I want you to look your best in your images….please don’t bring pieces dig into your shoulders, or hips especially. This is especially true with thigh highs….I would rather have you bring them too big than too small!
2. Don’t let what you see on my blog, website, Facebook or Instagram dictate what you wear. Get ideas from it yes…but none of it is a must have. If you feel super hot in a corset please bring that…if not, you will see that you are uncomfortable in your images…you don’t want that…trust me
3. Don’t be shy. I have been lucky enough to have photographed a ton of different women since I opened my studio. Talk to me about what you would like to create with me. This is your definition of sexy remember? I promise I won’t be shocked no matter what you have in mind 🙂 I am happy to collaborate with you on your vision for the session! This is all about you.
4. Don’t bring only lingerie. Robes, shirts, skirts dresses, tanks, whatever….those are your more “every day” sexy…..think about incorporating that too!! Its not just one definition remember?
5. Finally don’t make it all about the wardrobe at all. Yes its pretty. I am currently a huge sucker for anything strappy or that sparkles. But honestly? I can do an entire session with a sheet. We can do an entire session nude. I can wrap you up in tulle or lace or a fluffy blanket. That doesn’t phase me at all. You don’t have to have a suitcase full of lingerie pieces to have a session. You just need to bring the most important part. You. It’s you that are gorgeous….the lingerie is just the pretty wrapping.
